Yes, you heard that right! Did you know that the most viewed ever You Tube South Korean song Oppa Gangam Style is actually inspired by an actual city in South Korea.
The District of Gangnam also known as Gangnam-gu (translated as a Romanized Hangul) literally means South of the River, is a part of the 25 local government districts within the city of Seoul, South Korea.
It is said that after 30 years of reconstruction, the District of Gangnam became the most influential and affluent city of Seoul and the whole South Korea.This lens is a closer look at this very interesting city in South Korea.

The District of Gangnam, officially known as Gangnam-gu, translates as the South of the River. is one of the 25 gu (local government districts) which make up the city of Seoul, South Korea. As of the 2010 census, Gangnam had a population of 527,641, making it the 4th most populated district in Seoul. Gangnam is the third most expansive district in Seoul with an area of 39.5 km2.

Until the early 1980's Gangnam and its neighboring areas had remained the least developed in Seoul, but a prodigious development over the last 30 years has earned it a reputation of being the most affluent, dynamic, and influential area in both Seoul and South Korea as a whole.

- Gangnam Station
It is the main station found in the Gangnam District of Seoul, particularly the Seoul Subway Line 2. It is located at the western end of Teheranno, home to many corporate headquarters and impressive towers, while the area immediately to the north of the station is densely packed with bars, restaurants and clubs.The station was tagged as the 10th most expensive shopping street in the world.
- The Seonjeongneung
It lies the world's famous burial tombs of King Seongjong, King Jungjong and Queen Han of the Joseon Dynasty. Statues of civilian and military officials and their horses stand at attention in front of the graves. South of the tombs is a single T-shaped shrine of the type commonly found at Joseon-era royal tombs.
- Kimchi Field Museum
Established in 1986, located in B2 Coex Mall 159, Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is a renowned museum whose mission is to inform the world about one of the major items of Korean cuisine, kimchi. Exhibitions focus exclusively on kimchi's history, its varieties, and its importance to Korean culture and cuisine. Visit their website here.
-The Trade Tower
Located in Gangnam district, Seoul, is one of South Korea's tallest buildings. The 54-floor Trade Tower high-rise was built in 1988 and stands at 748 feet (228 m). It resembles two quadro-level towers in mirror image of each other. It is part of the COEX complex.
It was featured in the Gangnam Style Music Video popularized by the Korean Superstar Psy which lasted about thirty seconds featuring him doing his infamous horse riding dance on the topf of the Asem Tower.
-COEX Mall
It is an underground shopping mall located in Gangnam-gu Seoul, South Korea with an area of about 85,000 square metres. The COEX Mall is adjacent to the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center, which is part of the COEX complex, run by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA).
-The COEX Aquarium
It can also be found in Gangnam district, Seoul, is one of South Korea's largest Aquariums with over 40,000 creatures from over 650 species on display. The COEX Aquarium features 90 exhibition tanks grouped in fourteen "discovery zones", including six themed areas.The aquarium is housed within the COEX mall, which is, itself, part of the larger COEX Convention & Exhibition Center. The aquarium opened in 2000.
-Kukkiwon
Also known as World Taekwondo Headquarters, and home of the World Taekwondo Academy, is the official taekwondo governing organisation established by the South Korean government. It is supervised by the International Sports Division of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
-Korea City Air Terminal
It is also located in Gangnam district, Seoul, is one of South Korea's Airport terminals. It is part of the COEX complex. It is South Korea's public transportation facility in which travellers on certain flights can check in their luggage at the terminal before leaving for the airport as well as going through immigration for expedited entry once at the airport.
-Simone Handbag Museum
It is also located in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea opened on July 19, 2012 in a building resembling a handbag. 300 bags are on display at the museum, dating from 1550 to the present day.
- Bongeunsa
A Buddhist temple located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea founded in 947 during the reign King Wonseong by the monk Yeon-hoe, then the highest ranking monk of Silla, and originally named Kyongseoungsa. It is located on the slope of Sudo Mountain in Samseong-dong, across the street from the COEX Mall.
- Dosan Park
It is a park in the neighborhood of Sinsa-dong in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It was established in 1973 to commemorate the achievement and legacy of An Chang-ho, a famous independence activist. The name is after his pen name, Dosan.
- Yangjaecheon
It is a stream that flows through the city of Seoul, South Korea. It runs through Gangnam, which is the southern half of the city. It is a greenway stretching five and a half kilometers from Gwanaksan in Gyeonggi-do into Seoul through Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu, Songpa-gu until it runs into the Tancheon.
